Lift Truck Instructor
A lift Truck Instructor demonstrates and instructs pupils on the correct and efficient use of lift trucks for the moving of goods. The range of lift trucks can vary from lorry mounted to high risers designed for high rise storage facilities. As an instructor you would be required to know the equipment that you are training with to such a standard that you can easily pass on your experience providing the pupil with technical knowledge and skills to use the lift truck safely and with efficiency.
Training is more likely to take place on the customers site, using customers equipment. This will involve working away from home at times for sustained periods. You would need to hold a full Forklift Truck License and if training for accreditation you would need to be certified by the relevant body. HGV (LGV) Driving Instructor
An LGV Instructor introduces pupils to the controls and the basics of driving an LGV. During lessons they monitor the learner, the road and other vehicles carefully. In addition to road lessons, the LGV instructor will teach pupils how to maneuver the vehicles in relation to turning and reversing.
The LGV instructor will spend the majority of their time in a vehicle. Working hours depend on when pupils require lessons. This can often be at weekends and in the evening. However, some of the larger logistics organizations may have their own LGV instructors and working times may vary.
To be a driving instructor you should have excellent driving skills and enthusiasm for driving, be able to give directions and tuition clearly and concisely and be able to adapt your teaching style to suit all kinds of pupils such as nervous learners. You should have patience and good interpersonal skills, be able to stay calm and point out errors in a constructive way and have a sense of humor. you need to be able to react quickly and safely to any problems, be able to assess when not to intervene and when to encourage the learner and have a basic knowledge of car mechanics for explaining the use of gears, steering and so on.
To be an LGV instructor you must hold a current LGV licence and have a good driving record, as well as good eyesight and good colour vision. The LGV test includes a medical. The LGV Instructor course is based on a three part entrance examination comprising of a 100 question theory exam, a test of driving ability and a test of instructional ability.
