HGV (LGV) Mechanic

An LGV Mechanic is responsible for maintaining a companies' fleet of trucks. In addition, the mechanic will be required to repair any faults to the vehicles in a timely manner to avoid prolonged disruption to the service of the organisation.

The role can also involve being called offsite to a breakdown if the LGV can not be replaced and returned to the depot for repair. An LGV Mechanic will most likely be working on a shift rota system as most operations require 24 hour support. A certain degree of travel may be required due to breakdown call outs.

To be an LGV Mechanic you should consider an apprenticeship. You will gain a good working knowledge of LGV vehicles and be able to work on own initiative, under pressure and to tight deadlines.

All of the major truck manufacturers are looking to take on apprentices at various times to fulfil their own maintenance contracts.

A Motor Vehicle Mechanic NVQ, City & Guilds or recognized apprenticeship is essential for this position, although some employers may offer a Modern Apprenticeship scheme. Some employers may require an LGV Mechanic to possess a LGV licence and have a good driving record, as well as good eyesight and good colour vision. The LGV test includes a medical. If an LGV Technician holds an LGV Licence, the opportunity exists to become an LGV Driver increasing the potential routes to further develop a career in Logistics.
