Course Overview

The DGSA Directive requires that undertakings "..the activities of which include the transport, or the related loading or unloading, of dangerous goods by road, rail or inland waterways.." appoint one or more safety advisers "..to be responsible for helping to prevent the risks inherent in such activities with regard to persons, property and the environment..".

The directive requires the Safety Adviser to perform functions and duties in four main areas:

a) Provide advice to the undertaking on the transport of dangerous goods.
b) Monitor compliance with the rules governing the transport of dangerous
goods and other practices and procedures.
c) The preparation of reports whenever accidents occur during the transport
of dangerous goods in which the undertaking is concerned, and
d) The preparation of annual reports on the undertakings activities in the
transport of dangerous goods.

Before their appointment, Safety Advisers are required to gain a vocational training certificate. To that end we hold DGSA courses regularly. The examination must be booked direct with the Scottish Qualification Authority and reference books must be purchased from an appropriate supplier. This is a very intensive weeklong course and some knowledge of dangerous goods regulations (e.g. an ADR Course) is an advantage.
